Sex Superbug: First Antibiotic-Resistant STD Strain Found

FOX2now.com

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – Gonorrhea is one of the most commonly known sexually transmitted diseases.  The CDC reports that scientists have found the first “superbug” strain. They report no cases have been found in the United States. But, they caution that trends show that an antibiotic resistant strain is likely to show up in the US.

The H041 strain of the disease, found in Japan, cannot be treated by the class of antibiotics called “cephalosporins” which is commonly used to treat the disease.

“Experts say the best way to reduce the risk of even greater resistance developing — beyond the urgent need to develop effective new drugs — is to treat gonorrhea with combinations of two or more types of antibiotic at the same time,” reports, Reuters.
